The summer garden is buzzing with life, and one of the most anticipated guests is the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) that has taken up residence in one of my nest boxes. During the nesting season, birds must be given absolute peace. However, as a nature photographer, I still wanted to capture this stunning male from a close-up perspective—without jeopardising or disrupting its important daily routines.
The solution was a trusted piece of gear in my backyard setup: the Hähnel Captur Module Pro remote shutter release.

The Technique Behind the Shot
Approaching a nest with a camera demands caution and precise timing. Once the bird flew off, I quickly set up my tripod at an appropriate distance from the entrance hole. To ensure I wouldn’t miss the moment, I enabled full-area animal tracking and high-speed continuous shooting before hooking up the Hähnel wireless receiver.
With the Module Pro transmitter in hand, I moved well back into the shade. Birds adapt quickly to the presence of a camera body as long as there is no human movement near it. From a distance, I had a clear line of sight to the nest box, but enough space to ensure the flycatcher could go about his business completely undisturbed.
The Hähnel Captur Module Pro proved its worth once again:
- Reliable Wireless Connection: The signal travels flawlessly over a long distance, allowing me to wait for the perfect moment in total comfort without worrying about connectivity issues.
- Instant Shutter Response: When the pied flycatcher finally landed on the metal guard of the nest box, I pressed the trigger on the remote. The shot was captured instantly without the bird getting startled or even noticing a thing.
The end result is a beautifully sharp and, above all, ethically captured image of a backyard resident. Thanks to the remote shutter release, nesting continues completely undisturbed, and I walked away with a wonderful summer memory.
