Ensi kesän lomamatka: Suuntana Pohjois-Norja – Next Summer’s Adventure: Heading to Northern Norway

Haluan hieman valottaa (pun intended) ensi kesän suunnitelmiamme. Olemme vaimoni kanssa varanneet käyttöömme tilavan matkailuauton kahdeksi viikoksi, ja tarkoituksenamme on suunnata Norjan upeisiin rannikko- ja sisämaamaisemiin.

Reittimme Norjan osuus starttaa Trondheimistä, joka oli kolme vuotta sitten tekemämme Etelä-Norjan matkan pohjoisin piste. Nyt jatkamme siitä, mihin viimeksi jäimme, ja kuljemme rannikkoa pitkin kohti Tromssaa. Jos aikataulu ja matkavauhti sallivat, saatamme piipahtaa vieläkin pohjoisempana. Matkan päätarkoitus on kuitenkin lomailla rennosti: ajaa lyhyitä päivämatkoja, nauttia vapaudesta ja tutustua paikallisiin nähtävyyksiin omaan tahtiimme.

Isolla matkailuautolla liikkuessa matkanteko saa aivan omanlaisensa rytmin. Siinä missä henkilöautolla tulisi helposti suoritettua kilometrejä, asuntoautolla nautimme itse matkasta. Norjan kapeilla teillä, tunneleissa ja lukuisilla lauttaväleillä ei olekaan syytä pitää kiirettä. On mukavaa, että keittiö, makuuhuone ja “oma terassi” ovat aina mukana. Voimme pysähtyä juuri silloin, kun valo osuu kauniisti vuonon rantaan tai kun löydämme täydellisen paikan lounastauolle jylhien kallioseinämien varjosta.

Minulla on reissulle toinenkin tärkeä agenda: valokuvaus. Aiotulle reitille osuu useita Norjan parhaita merilintukohteita, kuten Helgelandin rannikolla sijaitseva Lovund sekä Lofoottien saaristoon kuuluva Røst. Näillä legendaarisilla lintukallioilla pääsen tallentamaan muistikortille ainakin lunneja, ruokkeja, pikkukajavia ja merimetsoja. Myös majesteettinen merikotka on rannikolla varsin tavallinen näky, jota toivon pääseväni kuvaamaan.
Lintujen ohella haluan panostaa maisemakuvaukseen. Norja on muodoiltaan ja valoltaan yksi maailman valokuvauksellisimmista paikoista, ja se tarjoaa loputtomasti inspiraatiota. Erityisesti Helgelandin rannikon tuhannet saaret ja Lofoottien pystysuoraan merestä nousevat vuorenhuiput ovat paikkoja, joissa kameraa on mahdotonta laskea käsistään. En pidä itseäni varsinaisena maisemakuvaajana, mutta aion tällä kertaa paneutua huolellisesti parhaiden kuvakulmien ja kohteiden etsimiseen. Tavoitteenani on löytää niitä pysäyttäviä hetkiä, joista voisi myöhemmin teettää upeita suuria tauluja kodin seinälle.

Vaikka tie on välillä kapea ja mutkainen, matkanteko suurella autolla on palkitsevaa juuri siksi, että voimme asettua aloillemme ja odottaa sitä täydellistä “sinistä hetkeä” tai keskiyön auringon punertamaa valoa suoraan auton ikkunasta. Kesää ja pohjoisen valoa odotellessa!

I’d like to shed some light (pun intended) on our plans for next summer. My wife and I have booked a spacious motorhome for two weeks, and we’ll be heading to the stunning coastal and inland landscapes of Norway.

Our route begins in Trondheim, which was the northernmost point of our trip to Southern Norway three years ago. This time, we’re picking up where we left off and following the coast up toward Tromsø. If our schedule and pace allow, we might even venture further north. However, the main goal of the trip is a relaxed holiday: driving short daily distances, enjoying the freedom of the road, and exploring local sights at our own pace.
Travelling in a large motorhome brings a unique rhythm to the journey. While you might be tempted to just rack up the miles in a regular car, in a motorhome, the journey itself is the reward. On Norway’s narrow roads, through its tunnels, and across numerous ferry crossings, there’s no reason to rush. There’s something luxurious about knowing your kitchen, bedroom, and “private terrace” are always with you—we can pull over exactly when the light hits a fjord just right or when we find the perfect spot for a lunch break in the shadow of towering cliffs.

I also have a second agenda for this trip: photography. Our planned route passes several of Norway’s premier seabird colonies, such as Lovund on the Helgeland coast and Røst in the Lofoten archipelago. At these legendary bird cliffs, I’ll have the chance to capture puffins, razorbills, kittiwakes, and shags on my memory card. The majestic white-tailed eagle is also a common sight along the coast, and I’m hoping to get some great shots of them.

In addition to the birds, I want to invest time in landscape photography. With its dramatic shapes and unique light, Norway is one of the most photogenic places in the world, offering endless inspiration. Especially the thousands of islands of the Helgeland coast and the vertical peaks of Lofoten rising straight from the sea are places where it’s impossible to put the camera down. I don’t consider myself a “pro” landscape photographer, but this time I intend to focus carefully on finding the best angles and subjects. My goal is to capture those breathtaking moments that could later be printed as stunning, large-scale gallery wraps for our walls at home.

Even though the roads can be narrow and winding, travelling in a large vehicle is rewarding precisely because we can settle in and wait for that perfect “blue hour” or the crimson glow of the midnight sun right from our own window. I can’t wait for the summer and that northern light!
