Hi, I’m Juha. I’m a nature and bird photographer from Finland.

I’ve had a camera with me since I was a teenager. At first, I was mostly fascinated by cameras, lenses and the technical side of photography. Over the years, photography became something much more important to me. It gives me a reason to spend time outdoors, to slow down and to pay attention to what is happening around me.

Birds are my main subjects. I enjoy photographing them, but I’m equally interested in their behaviour and the places they live. A good bird photograph often starts long before the shutter is pressed. It can mean finding the right place, learning when a bird is likely to appear and then sitting quietly for hours. Sometimes nothing happens. Sometimes you get a few seconds to react.

Most of my photography takes place in Finland, particularly around the forests, fields, wetlands and lakes of Central Finland. I also travel further north and elsewhere in Scandinavia when there is a particular place, species or season I want to photograph. I like returning to familiar places. Seeing the same landscape and birdlife year after year makes you notice things that would otherwise be easy to miss.

I’m interested in the technical side of photography as well. Cameras, lenses, settings, RAW processing and printing are all part of the process for me. I enjoy trying things out, figuring out why something works—or doesn’t—and improving my own way of working.

Over the past year, I have also taken a more structured approach to developing my photography. I recently completed the Professional Foundations of Nature Photography programme. My studies will continue with the Nature Photographer Master Class advanced programme.

I see studying as a natural continuation of years of photographing and learning by doing. The aim is not simply to learn more, but to develop my own photography and become more confident in working on demanding assignments.

I’m also interested in working with organisations, companies and other partners on photography projects and assignments related to nature, wildlife and the outdoors.

Returning to the same places has changed the way I look at photography. When you see the same landscape and birdlife year after year, changes become easier to notice. The timing of the seasons, the habitats and the birds are not always the same. That has made me think more about photography as a way of recording the places and wildlife I know while they are still familiar.
